Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, Pralhad Joshi, has called for global cooperation for sustainable and varied production of sugarcane. Addressing the workshop ‘Sugar and Biofuels: Emerging Vistas’ during the 64th International Sugar Organisation-IISO Council Meeting in Delhi, Mr Joshi said that it is key to balance the interests of consumers, farmers, and industry while formulating any plan. He urged the members of the workshop to come together and brainstorm to produce a crop with minimal water usage and maximum usage. He added that the value of sugarcane has reached a new height due to its ability to produce clean fuel.
Talking to the media, Mr Joshi hoped that with India hosting the ISO meeting after 12 years, new and innovative ideas would be churned out for farmers’ welfare, consumer welfare, and water-saving, which is the need of the hour.
The 64th ISO Council Meeting is being hosted in New Delhi, with delegates from more than 30 countries and representatives of many international organisations participating in the three-day meeting to deliberate on critical issues in the sugar and biofuel sectors.
